How does your setup behave?
Plays a few short bursts of noise and listens for them coming back. The delay between the two is your device’s full audio round trip — that number is what lines your recordings up, so knowing it is stable matters more than it being small. Takes about fifteen seconds.
1 Set up
Acoustic: speakers on at a normal level, microphone unmuted, room reasonably quiet. The bursts sound like short static hisses. Headphones: the mic cannot hear what is in your ears, so hold one earcup against the microphone for the ten seconds of the test — the number only depends on the two devices, not on where they are. Cable: connect headphone out to a line or mic input for a ±1 ms measurement. Use the −20 dBFS level for headphones and cables. Avoid Bluetooth — it adds 100–300 ms that varies from run to run.
